Unmasked

A superhero poem in 5 parts. Part I: The Dark Night Falls Part II: Eternal Dream Part III: After the Golden Age Part IV: Graphic Part V: Origin Story In 2011 I gathered a group of artist friends from around Perth and asked for their help in illustrating my 5-part superhero poem Unmasked. Originally, Unmasked … Continue reading Unmasked

Unmasked- Part V

Origin Story In which reality is blurred, we go back to the beginning to discover how it all began, sleep the sleep of the dead and get awkwardly personal. There is a moment a singular occasion one infinitesimal point in time just before my eyelids close just before sleep takes me between my conscious thoughts … Continue reading Unmasked- Part V

Unmasked- Part IV

Graphic In which our hero does a lot of things and nothing much at all, a blank page is filled, we learn a thing or two about the process and realise that Dream Girl doesn't screen her calls. "Dream Girl sighs, alone in the tunnel. She's wasting all her energy holding back the blood, stopping … Continue reading Unmasked- Part IV

Unmasked- Part III

After The Golden Age In which we skip straight to the comics anyway, discover a new level of disdain for the tabloids, encounter a threat and realise that it's not every dream in which we can fly. On Monday, all hell breaks loose. The Morning Herald runs with 'Dream Girl Sleeps With the Enemy' The … Continue reading Unmasked- Part III

Unmasked- Part II

Eternal Dream In which the obituaries page loses a member, we learn some comic comic book life lessons, can't help but stare at her legs, and realise there's a fundamental flaw in our hero's superpowers. Mild-mannered Matthew rough round the edges sits atop a skyscraper legs over ledges. Sitting there staring down on the heads … Continue reading Unmasked- Part II

Unmasked- Part I

The Dark Night Falls In which we are introduced to our hero, take a left to the chin, rethink the floor plan of our evil lair and plan a lunar picnic. She can fly, you know, if she wants to,she could zock you on the chin, she could punch right through three feet of steel if it should come to it. She could … Continue reading Unmasked- Part I

Just finished this powerful book and now I’m seeing lots of wonderful photos of writer friends celebrating the launch last night in Perth, so wanted to say congrats to @jtaylorauthor!!!
That little ‘Pre-order’ button is a thing of beauty! Where the Line Breaks is now available to pre-order from the @fremantlepress website, or from your favourite independent bookstore.
Our neighbours across the road (who we’ve adopted over the course of lockdown) brought us daffodils! So we gave them homemade apple cake in return. And it’s Friday!
I don’t remember consciously deciding to write part of Where the Line Breaks in footnotes, it just sort of happened that way. I think I loved the idea of the footnotes growing out of control and taking over, like a wordy, literate monster of some sort - all gnashing verbs and long sticky sentences.
Alongside the wonderful cover by @nadabackovic, here’s my other favourite thing about the physical copies of Where the Line Breaks.
My ‘war shelf’ on the bottom: full of inspiration and research and poetry and humour (have you read the Wipers Times? Highly recommended).
Where the Line Breaks was inspired by a pilgrimage to Gallipoli for Anzac Day in 2013 with @yolly87. It was awe and novel-inspiring.
Wondering what #WheretheLineBreaks is all about? I made a video laying it all out, and you can watch it on YouTube, or through my website (link in my profile).
Another throwback to the 2019 @fogartyfoundation Fogarty Literary Award where I was lucky enough to be offered publication for Where the Line Breaks, and my nephew Kit got to see his mum @fiona_burrows_illustration launch her book Violet & Nothing.
